Anfang Oktober 1973 begannen Israels Nachbarn den Jom-Kippur-Krieg, dessen Schockwirkung bis heute nachhallt. Obwohl Syrien und Ägypten diesen bis heute als Sieg feiern, konnten sie Israel nicht bezwingen.

Der Weiler Makhoul im Jordantal ist zum besonderen Brennpunkt des Nahostkonflikts geworden, seit die israelische Militärverwaltung die Häuser der dort lebenden Beduinen abgerissen hat.

Verbogene Bleche, Bauschutt und ein paar verstreute Schafe sind alles, was von dem Dorf Makhoul geblieben ist, nachdem die israelische Armee Mitte September eine Abrissorder durchsetzte. Die dort siedelnden Beduinen harren seitdem auf dem nackten Boden aus. >> ganzer Bericht

Israel is ramping up its efforts to fight the growing campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS).

Anshel Pfeffer reveals in Haaretz this weekend:

"Today’s battle is BDS – the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign being waged against Israel. Significant efforts are being invested by the government and pro-Israel organizations to fend off BDS. This week I discovered that in the Israeli embassy in London alone, there are two people (one diplomat and a local employee) whose full-time brief is to monitor and counter BDS attempts. >> full text

When the Zionist movement appeared in Eastern Europe in the 1880s, it found it very difficult to persuade the leading rabbis and secular Jewish thinkers of the day to support it.

The leading rabbis saw the political history in the Bible and the idea of Jewish sovereignty on the land of Israel as very marginal topics and were much more concerned, as indeed Judaism as a religion was, with the holy tracts that focused on the relationship between the believers themselves and in particular their relations with God.  >> full text
