After Oslo - New Realities, Old Problems

Pluto Press, London/Chicago, ISBN: 0- 7453- 1243- 8
The Israel/ Palestine Peace Accord was conceived in 1993, after extensive secret meetings between the two parties, and a Declaration of Principles was signed in Oslo in September of the same year. This was followed by 'Oslo II', signed in Washington on 28 September 1995 by the Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzak Rabin, and Chairman of the PLO, Yasser Arafat. It was, in many ways, a new approach to peace negociation and it has had a profound impact on the Middle East. But how successful has it been in achieving its objective?

The contributors to this volume - all recognized experts on the region - critically assess the effectiveness of the Peace Accord, its consequences for Israel/ Palestine in general and for Palestinian society specifically. The volume demonstrates that the effects of the Oslo process, in terms of creating peace, have been maigre. By scrutinising its framework, the contributors expose the limitations of the process and seriously question whether it can ever lead to a lasting peace in the Middle East.
